CS302 Short Notes
A database management system (DBMS), on the other hand, is a software or tool that serves to manage the database and its users. DBMS consists of various components or sub system, which we will study later. Each DBMS subsystem or component.
Performs different functions, so a DBMS is a collection of different programs, but all work together to manage the data stored in the database and its users. In many books and a database and database management system may sometimes be used in this course.
Interchangeably, but there is a clear difference between the two and we should be clear about them. Sometimes another term is used, i.e. database system, again this term was different people use it differently, but in this course we use the term database
system as a combination of database and database management system. So the database is Collection of data, DBMS is a tool for managing this data and both together are called database
System.

Databases are important; why? Computer applications are traditionally divided into
commercial and scientific (or engineering). Scientific applications include more
calculations, i.e. different types of calculations that vary from simple to very complex.

Today, such applications exist, such as in the field of space, nuclear, medical, which take
hours or days of calculations even on modern computers. On the other hand,
applications that are labeled as commercial or business applications are not included
a lot of calculations, rather smaller calculations, but mainly do I/O
operation.

This means that these applications store data mainly in the computer storage.
