The figure shows various subsystems or applications in an educational institution, e.g library system, examination system and registration system. They are separate, different application programs for each application or subsystem. However, data for all applications are stored in the same place in the database and all application programs the relevant data and users are managed by the DBMS.
This is a typical database system environment and brings the following benefits:
o Data Sharing
Data for different applications or subsystems resides in the same place. This represents the main advantage of data sharing. That is, data that is common between them different applications do not need to be saved repeatedly, as was the case with a file processing environment. For example, all three systems of an educational institution.
